Marriage:
Marriage was one of the most important times in a woman's life even though she did not have much say in who she was getting married to. Marriages were arranged between the parents of the bride and the groom. The marriages were based around forming alliances with other families and/or for expanding business. There was a strict law that Athenians couldn't marry anyone that wasn't from Athens and this carried severe punishments. Most marriages took place in the month of January because this is the month of the Hera (the goddess of family). The marriage celebration would last three days and consisted of three different parts: the proaulia a pre-wedding ceremony, the gamos the actual wedding, and the epaulia the post-wedding ceremony.
