Death:
It was believed by the ancient Athenians that after you died that your soul traveled to the underworld that was controlled by Hades. The body of the dead person was mourned at the families/friend house before they were taken and buried or cremated. Sometimes they families and friends would have a funeral feast and then before leaving they would smash the plates and left it on the floor to show how sad they were. Dark coloured clothes often black were worn to these funerals. Graves were often accompanied by a carving in a rock of the person who had died. They had a strict rule for tomb stones though and that was that no more than 10 men could work on a tomb stone for more than three days. The Athenians believed that only when the ashes were scattered on the earth that the spirits could enter the underworld.
